The Big Bend Bears’ summer baseball team had a double-header sweep of the Tallahassee Baseball Club in Chattahoochee last Wednesday night, defeating the visitors 2-0 and 5-2.
Adam DeWitt (Chipola) pitched the first game win by throwing a 4-hitter at TBC, fanning five and allowing no walks.
It was DeWitt's fifth win of the summer and second shut-out. He allowed only two base runners in one inning and that was the final frame when TBC had runners on second and third with two outs. Nolan Haire (Munroe) made a fine catch on a looping hit from his shortstop position to end the game and preserve the shut-out.
The Bears scored a first-inning run when Brad Middleton (Chipola) walked, swiped second base and scored on a single by Tyler Colston (Marianna).
Middleton also tallied the second Bear run. He was hit with a pitch leading off the third inning, was sacrificed to second by Stephen Miller (Munroe), and scored on a single by Hunter Jordan (Blountstown).
Walker Roberts (Marianna) was the second game winner going the distance with a five-hitter. Roberts struck out six, walked only two hitters and gained his third win of the summer.
The two runs off Roberts were tainted and came in the first inning, ending a string of 32 scoreless frames thrown by Bear pitchers.
The home team overcame those two runs with a three-run second inning that saw Franklin Van Gurp (Chipola) lead off with a hit. That was followed by a Miller double and a walk to Middleton that loaded the bases.
Roberts then scored Van Gurp with a sacrifice fly before Miller and Middleton scored on a ringing double by Josh Taylor (Sneads).
The Bears added two more runs in the third inning when Reid Long (Marianna) opened the frame with a single, stole second and scored on a Colston single.
After Colston stole second he scored on Van Gurp’s double to wind up the game’s scoring.
The two victories lifted the Bear record to 15-6. Big Bend played two games against Leesburg in Albany Tuesday and hosted Tallahassee Post 13 in a pair of games Wednesday.
The Bears’ season will wrap up with a double-header against Ozark at Marianna's Chipola Field Saturday, and a twin bill against Post 13 at TCC Wednesday.
