Friday night the East Gadsden Jaguars hosted the Pensacola Pine Forest Eagles in a Non-Conference contest. It was the Jaguars’ home opener for the 2013 Football Season.
Both teams came into the ball game with identical 0-1 records. This was Coach Trace Laing’s first home opener as the head coach of the Jaguars.
For most of the first quarter neither defense was willing to give up a lot of ground. But late in the quarter the Jaguars would mix the pass and run to sustain a drive that ended with La'Javier Turner finding pay dirt on a 2-yard run. Kicker Billy Prior tacked on the extra point and the Jaguars would took a 7-0 lead with 1:34 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter the visitors from Pensacola went on an 80-yard, 4-minute drive for six points. The extra point kick hit the left upright and the Eagles trailed the Jaguars 7-6. With 3:51 left in the quarter the Jaguars recovered an Eagles’ fumble only to turn it back over to the Eagles on the next play on a fumble. The Eagles attempted a 15-yard field goal to take the lead only to have the kick hit the upright with 1:22 left before halftime.
At the half the Jaguars were still clinging to a one point lead 7-6.
The teams started their warm-ups for the second half but were sent back the dressing rooms due to lightning. The lightning delay wound up lasting 1-1/2 hours.
With 8:19 left in the third quarter the Jaguars once again found the end zone, this time on a 49-yard Al Peterson to Kendre James pass and catch. Prior kicked the extra point and the Jaguars stretched their lead to eight points, 14-6. The third quarter came to an end with East Gadsden leading Pine Forest 14-6.
In the fourth quarter the Jaguars threatened to add to their 8-point advantage and drove to the Eagles’ ½-yard line only to fumble the ball away to Pine Forest. The Jaguars sealed the victory with 1:35 left in the game when defensive back Javerious Johnson picked off an errant Eagles’ pass. The Jaguars ran the clock out and got their first win of the young 2013 Football campaign.
The Jaguars were lead by Jeremiah Johnson who gave a great effort on the offensive and defensive line.
Next up for the Jaguars is another home game as they play host Friday, September 6th to the Rams from Panama City Rutherford High School.
Come out and support the Jaguars. Kickoff is 7:30 PM EDT.
