RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY: Soggy outfields, rain-soaked infields, wet tennis courts: the rain continues to play havoc with high school spring sports schedules.
The Munroe baseball team managed to get in two games last week as they dominated their nemesis Aucilla on Tuesday by a 9-0 score and eked out at 4-3 extra inning, makeup game at Brookwood on Saturday.
The Bobcats pounded out 13 hits against Aucilla and junior Casey Mathers gave up only three hits to the Warriors. Munroe rallied against Brookwood when Bradley Klees drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th and Stephen Miller held them to one run in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Miller also led his team in hitting with three hits against Aucilla and two hits against Brookwood.
The two wins pushed the Bobcats to 9-0 on the season. This week the undefeated Bobcats face Franklin County and Westwood (Camilla, Georgia) before spending three days of next week’s spring break in Jacksonville at the P-Town Classic baseball tourney.
The Allen High School football stadium in north Texas was recently shut down only 18 months after opening. Widely publicized as the most expensive high school stadium in the United States, the $60 million stadium (yes, I said $60 million) has extensive cracks leading to structural concerns. So far, various daily activities have been moved and June’s graduation ceremony has relocated.
NOT PLAYING BY THE RULES:
This past week it was revealed through investigations that at least 14 players on a 58-man football roster at an Atlanta high school were using fake addresses to enroll and play football. Some used made-up addresses, some used the address of an assistant football coach at Grady County High School. Coaches deny any knowledge of the fake addresses. A report, including a list of the team’s violations will be given to the Georgia High School Association. The report recommends civil and criminal penalties for parents who submitted documents containing false information.
